A downloadable game for Windows

Up Beat is a Foddian-inspired Rhythm game, where you control a spirited climbing blob through a 4-note lens. Be careful however, one wrong note will send your friend plummeting down the song chart, ricocheting off of the unfortunately shaped notes.

There is a known issue where the four channels are not bound to keys unless you go to the 'Rebind' menu option and set them first. This is fixed in the GitHub Release!

To navigate the menu use Up/W, Down/S, and Space!

The code for Up Beat is available on GitHub!

Design

I made this game to try and match what I saw as the main tenants of a Foddian game;

  • Failure is the players fault, and this is communicated to them!
  • Failure can compound into dramatic events
  • Failure rewinds progress for the player
  • Players should be able to improve at it
  • The difficulty curve is very punishing

I believe Up Beat meets most of these rules, the latter-most one being the trickiest to tick off due to the varying level of player's skills when it comes to rhythm games.

What a blast to play! Took me a good 10 minutes to beat. Like others have suggested though it would be nice to have better visual feedback that you actually hit the notes. May I recommend a hit sound, a slight white flash on the block, and then make the block semi transparent to not confuse the player.

As someone who regularly plays OsuMania, this was a pretty easy but fun game

super fun but too short, wish it was longer

Yeah I agree with Jung. The game is great, but PLEASE make the notes fade away after you hit them, it really throws you off. And the blob will still make it, it'll be fine.

I enjoyed this game! I think maybe removing the notes when you hit them would be nice, so it doesn't clutter up the screen in the harder parts. The scroll speed was perfect for this song too. And the little orange blob was really cute!
